In 1926, a large brick luxury railway hotel called the Newfoundland Hotel opened on the site. In the early 1960s, it was renamed Hotel Newfoundland under Canadian National’s branding policy. For decades, it held weddings, banquets, and major events.
By the late 1970s the old hotel was outdated and required huge renovation costs. The original 1926 hotel was demolished and construction of a new modern hotel began Nov 1980, opening in 1982. It has operated under a few names since, Hotel Newfoundland, Fairmont Newfoundland, and the now Sheraton Hotel Newfoundland (under the Sheraton/Marriott brand).
Event Space
The venue offers eight event spaces anchored by the stunning Salon A and Salon B ballrooms, which can be combined for receptions of up to 625 guests. The spaces feature soft carpeting, square tables with white linen, and elegant flatware, keeping the look clean and versatile so couples can layer in their own decor. But perhaps the most beloved space in the building is the Garden Court — a light-drenched, glass-enclosed indoor garden alive with leafy plants and trees, ideal for intimate ceremonies of up to 100 guests. It feels like stepping outside while staying perfectly sheltered from Newfoundland’s unpredictable weather.
Packages are customizable and the dedicated wedding coordinator team will work with you on menus, room configurations, and vendor logistics. In-house catering covers everything from cocktail receptions and food stations to seated plated dinners. Overnight accommodation is available for wedding parties and out-of-town guests in the hotel’s 301 rooms. The Sheraton also offers spa services, an indoor pool, and sauna, making it a true one-stop-shop for wedding weekend celebrations.

- Nearby Duckworth Street provides colourful facades and loads of character. Gower St and Jellybean Row is in walking distance.
