The Atrium
The Atrium is a modern and bright, expansive venue located in the Core Sciences Facility on the Memorial University Campus. The building opened in Sept 2021 and is located on the north west corner of the campus, closest to the Health Sciences.
Background
A blue whale skelaton hangs in atrium of the Core Science Facility. It was recovered in 2014 from the west coast of Newfoundland after washing ashore in Bonne Bay.
According to MUN, “The height of the whale atrium is 30 m (98’), and was specially designed to display and house the whale, which measures 25 m (82’). The whale is posed as if it swimming – a nod to Memorial’s motto Provehito in Altum, which means “launch forth into the deep”, and symbolizes the spirit of discovery that is central to a university.”
Event Space
The venue exists within the Atrium on the main floor, and consists of a couple of spaces which can be utilized for events – the large atrium itself and the North Gallery, which is a long hallway lined with windows that face north.
Pro Tips
- Fully draping the large south facing windows at the venue offers privacy and cleans up the backdrop for the ceremony and photos. It also reduces reflection from flash which will likely be needed during the reception.
- Plan time to depart the campus for a few photos as it will offer more variety and privacy for more romantic shots. Lots of locations exist within 10-15 mins of the venue.
- The natural light in the venue and the architectural features allow for a great rain plan.

Weather Considerations
The Sheraton’s events take place entirely indoors, so weather is not a concern at this venue.
