Kids don’t stay this age for long. You feel it every time you look at a photo from a year ago and think when did that happen? Family photography isn’t really about getting everyone to smile at the same time (though we’ll get there). It’s about capturing who your people are right now — the personalities, the age gaps, the chaos, the tenderness. That’s what I’m after.

My approach to family portrait sessions is relaxed and genuinely fun. I’ll guide you through some prompts and moments — a walk, a tickle fight, everyone piling onto a blanket — and in between, I’m watching for the real stuff. The laugh that got out of control. The older kid being surprisingly gentle with the little one. The look between you and your partner that says we made this family. Those are the frames that end up being your favourites, and they can’t be posed — they can only be caught.

Family photo sessions take place outdoors or in your home (occasionally in my home studio for smaller family groups). Outdoors lets us take advantage of Newfoundland’s incredible landscapes — coastlines, meadows, forests, golden evening light — and the variety means your gallery feels full and dynamic. In-home family sessions are more intimate, photos that look like an actual Tuesday at your house in the best possible way. The familiar light, the kids in their element. A warmth that’s hard to replicate anywhere else.

I also love doing individual and sibling portraits within a session — just the kids, no adults, being little and wild and best friends (or frenemies, depending on the day). These are the ones that tend to get framed. And if you have grandparents or extended family visiting, extended family photography sessions are absolutely something I offer — logistically a little like herding cats, but so worth it.

I’ll help with wardrobe guidance before your session so everyone looks cohesive without looking overly coordinated — tones and textures that complement each other and work beautifully with your chosen location. And if a full session isn’t in the cards right now, keep an eye out for my seasonal mini sessions in St. John’s — shorter, more affordable family portrait sessions offered a few times a year, perfect for updated photos or holiday cards.
